Understanding the intricacies of this texas holdem is a task which takes many years for even the most dedicated player to learn, but the game it’s self is malleable enough to provide endless fun for even the newest of players.

Practice makes perfect – and there are no exceptions here. The first step is having a sound understanding of the basics. Players are initially stumped by the betting structure – something that changes game to game and hand to hand. The important thing to understand are the blinds. The two players to the left of the dealer must pay a certain amount of money at the beginning of each hand. This amount can change through the game and must be played every hand (it ensures there is always something in the pot for the winner). Once blinds have been posted, all players receive two cards, called ‘pocket cards’.

Each player MUST use at least one of these cards in their final five card hand. After a round of texas holdem betting, the dealer lays down the flop; three cards in the centre of the table which are community cards that all players can use to form their hand. From here there in another round of betting, where players assert their hand strength in an attempt to either knock others out of the game, or encourage them to add money to the pot. After this a fourth card, know as the turn is dealt along side the flop. Once the following texas holdem round of betting has taken place a fifth card, know as the river is placed on the table.

All cards have now been played. From here, each player still in the pot must either call, bet or fold, based on the state of the pot and the assumed strength of their five card hand (which is made up of a combination of their pocket cards, and the communal ones on the table).

During this last texas holdem round, called the showdown, all players must either bow out, or show their cards and the player with the best hand wins.
