playing poker sets

It is never easy to flop a set when you are dealt a pocket pair, and so it is important to play the hand well I feel. Your immediate thoughts should not be those of assumption that you will win the pot, but you can certainly have confidence in such a hand.

Unless you complete the Full House in this situation, it is fair to say that there will always be some danger lurking, and so you should be firstly looking at where these potential dangers may come from. The most obvious dangers are Flushes and Straights, so cards which are numerically close to one another or which include two to a suit, are your main concerns on the flop. If you find a flop with three cards to a suit or potential Straight, you really have to tread carefully. Often in this situation I would be tempted to make a small raise on the flop, then a larger raise on the turn if that card obviously misses these big draws, which is likely in poker.

it is not only with pocket pairs that you make a set however, as paired flops can bring the same situation. Usually I would say that betting into such a flop when you have trips is not advisable because of the obvious danger from your opponents point of view, even if they have paired the other board card. Personally though, at my local game I would bet out, because everyone expects me to be bluffing whenever I bet. So how you play these hands should revolve mostly around potential dangers, but bear in mind how people perceive your playing style too, as this can have a bearing on choosing your best option.

pokerstars.com review

Pokerstars has many strengths and reasons why it’s name is held in such high regard in terms of online poker.

Personally, I have always liked the fact that PokerStars offer so much choice in the games you can play. There are games available in both Omaha and Stud with hi/lo variants, as well as H.O.R.S.E events, Holdem, Five card Draw, and others. This means that no matter what your favoured game, you won’t be disappointed.

Pokerstars also have a team of sponsored pros which feature some of the best players in the world. I suppose apart from getting the name of the site itself on television, these pros inspire confidence amongst regular customers, which is equally important.

Graphics on the Poker Stars site are smooth and up to date, although generally, I favour moving interactive avatars because that is what I have become used to. Bonuses for first time depositors and loyalty bonuses, are as good as most other sites, giving the chance for bankroll boosts to regular players or those starting out. The tournaments on offer cover a great variety and include large guaranteeds which can potentially provide tremendous wins. Customer support is of an excellent standard too, with knowledgable staff, swiftly helping you 24/7.

Overall I have to say that Pokerstars.com have risen to be one of the best poker rooms around, and with good reason. I cannot see any reason why they should not maintain this position either, as they continue to provide a great service with strong player traffic and constantly changing online poker ranks.

pokeroom.co.uk review

How Have Recent World Finance Problems Affected Poker at Pokeroom.co.uk? When I talk of world finance problems I mean the so called ‘credit crunch’ we have felt recently. Whilst I do not have the inside information to say this with any certainty, I would think that many online poker rooms are feeling the knock on effects of these troubled times.

Poker is a recreational activity that costs money, and so wherever you find people trying to conserve money, you have to think that poker playing will suffer in some way.

On a personal note, I can say that these matters have not really influenced my poker playing at Pokeroom, as I have always managed to keep a small amount of funds to one side if I need them. It used to be the case that when I had a good evening and made some money, I would go and treat myself to a good night out or something similar, but now, I set money aside to pay for poker the following week. I have never been a player to spend large amounts of money on poker and strive for a higher online poker rank anyway, and I think the byproduct of our current situation will be that people play for smaller stakes rather than quit altogether.

Some of the largest poker rooms including Poker Room, may well notice a slight difference, but I think it unlikely that anything particularly drastic will happen.

It might be that live events such as the WSOP will see less numbers this year due to the size of buy ins, but smaller local tournaments at Pokeroom.co.uk shouldn’t see a significant drop in numbers I wouldn’t think. My local game hasn’t seen a noticeable change, and let us hope the game as a whole will not either.

poker and pressure

When playing poker, there is often pressure involved, maybe even on a smaller scale in local or home games. Of course when you play a local game you are not on the brink of winning millions or mixing with the best players in the world, but I certainly feel that pride can cause us to fear losing, and where there is a will to win, there will always be some sort of pressure.

I suppose that it is largely dependant on how seriously you take your poker, as for many it is merely a social pastime. I will freely admit that to me though, it is something more. I always want to win any game I play, more for the feeling of accomplishment than any financial gain. Despite this, I do of course enjoy playing poker immensely and the social side of the game is one of it’s finer points in my opinion.

Small amounts of self imposed pressure are what drive us to improve in my opinion and so it is no bad thing to feel frustrated when you make a bad decision, it merely shows you care about your game.
Pressure on the biggest stage of poker will be ever present of course with large sums of money or titles at stake, and this can have different effects on different people. Some thrive on on it and some crumble under it, and that is partly why watching high stakes games is so enjoyable I feel.

fulltiltpoker.com review

Full Tilt is one of the largest poker rooms in the world and as such, it’s professionalism, and reliability are excellent. Satellites to major events as well as all the usual tournaments and cash games are all present, and they have a sponsored team of professionals including many of the best players in the world.

This speaks volumes in itself for the Full Tilt Poker site, and shows that the site is in the top two or three in the world I feel.  Their visual aspects and avatars could improve if I am looking for a negative point, but the fact that so many players love to play here tells you that the plus points far outweigh any negatives.

The first time deposit bonus at FullTiltPoker is 100% up to an amount of $600, which is generous enough to help most players start out with a comfortable bankroll. Guaranteed tournaments with prize pools running into the millions ensure that the big players keep coming back, and speaking of big players, the ‘durrrr challenge’ has attracted a lot of interest. Patrick Antonius has taken the young pro up on his offer and is down by around $30k after over 7,000 hands. This publicity can only be good for Full Tilt, and shows that this is the site where pros are happy to play with potentially millions at stake.

I do not spend much of my time on FullTiltPoker.com personally, but I would certainly be tempted to if they offered a more realistic high tech gameplay. This is a general point for poker rooms though, and does not take anything away from the fact that Full Tilt is a huge online poker room with an impressive online poker rank system, and with good reason.

Recent PokerStars Tournaments

My usual live game at PokerStars this week did not bring a great deal of success aside from one double through with (Q,Q). I couldn’t get above 7,000 in chips and only outlasted half the field. I have picked up some points in the league though and remain just outside the top ten out of 41 participants. Having played two less games than most, this is still a good platform to build from, and I had a little more fortune later on in the evening.

We played a side game at Poker Stars with 8 players and I finished in 2nd place, Perhaps missing a chance to win when I folded to an all in bet preflop whilst holding (7,7). Looking through what would have been our flop, a (7) awaited, but I do not regret the decision as I would have been around 52% to win, for all my chips, and I like to look for more favourable situations than that.

After arriving home, I logged in to play an Omaha tournament and eventually finished 2nd out of 35 runners turning the evening into a profitable one all in all.

Perhaps one reason why I did not play quite as well in the main live game was that one of the usual players had remarked beforehand that I was playing more cautiously these past few weeks, and he was right. That wasn’t something I wanted too many players to realise though, and so I started out playing more loose than I perhaps should have done.

I shall approach next weeks game with a more careful gameplan I think, partly because my loose play early on was perhaps more damaging than I hoped it might be and may have reduced my online poker rank.

Pokeroom.co.uk Poker Goals

Just this week I found myself thinking through my personal achievements in poker at Pokeroom.co.uk, and began to formulate ideas about what I would like to achieve in the future.

I have won SnG and MTT tournaments in Holdem, Omaha, Omaha hi/lo, and Five Card Draw, although Seven Card Stud remains my perennial weakness.

With this in mind, my first aim at Pokeroom.co.uk should be to learn more about the game and see if I can begin to find some success with it. That should be my first aim, but something rather more enjoyable sprang to mind. If my memory serves me correctly, I have never had over 1 million in chips in front of me during a tournament. I remember winning an Omaha tournament two years ago and I finished with around 700,000 chips, but I usually play MTT’s that do not have the field sizes to put this amount of chips in play.

Today I found myself sitting down to a freeroll with a 1 cent rebuy option. After the add on period, there were 3.2 million chips in play which gave me the opportunity to achieve my target. With a starting number of 2000 participants, it was never going to be easy, and I managed only 354th place, never getting above 15,000 chips.

It was an unfortunate end too, as I got all my chips in on the flop of three undercards to my pocket tens.

I was called by a maniac with (J,Q) who promptly caught a Queen on the turn, but then that’s freerolls for you.

I shall be persevering with this target in the coming weeks, as well as beginning to bury my head in some Seven Card Stud books. Surely in the meantime I will come up with more ideas to improve my poker playing at Pokeroom, and improve my online poker rank.
