pokerroom.com playing styles

I think that in poker, there are two extremes of style, and players will often fall either in one of those categories, or somewhere in between. Players such as Chris Ferguson, Barry Greenstein, and Phil Hellmuth, in my opinion, seem to make judgements supported by mathematics more often than not.

This can bring a great deal of success to players I feel, because in essence, poker is a game of chance and odds. These players who appear to calculate the best path forward when they are at the tables always seem to do well, but to my way of thinking, they do not have that same creative spark as players like Gus Hansen, Tom Dwan, and the late Stu Ungar. I suppose it really is a case of preference and perhaps patience too.

I know I am much happier getting involved with a marginal hand in the right circumstances, than simply sitting back stoically to wait for a premium hand. I have always been this way, as I feel that it is the best possible way to hone your skills of playing on the flop and making key decisions. So certainly in my opinion, the creative plays are what make the game so wonderful, and whilst you my take bigger swings playing creatively, you will have memorable battles with your opponents and truly test yourself to the limit more often.

Having said all this though, I have to summarise by saying that there is a time and a place where both plays are more effective. Being skilled enough to switch between creative moves and careful diligence will perhaps be the true key to fulfilling your potential as a poker player.

FullTiltPoker.com: Hand Recap

Playing online poker at Full Tilt Poker is different to playing in live games. This was a key hand in my local live tournament this week, and resulted in my stack almost doubling in size. I had been dealt (Jh,Kd) and decided to put in a raise preflop. We were still in the early stages of the tournament and so I was happy enough to get involved with a marginal hand. I had one caller from the player on my right, who I knew from past experience to be very loose and reckless in certain circumstances. The fact that I had folded a strong hand and shown it earlier may have contributed to what happened in this hand.

The flop fell (5s,Kh,5h) and my opponent checked to me. At this point, I felt there was value in checking behind to give him a chance to bluff the turn. the turn card was a (7h) giving me a flush draw, and my hope of inducing a bet with the previous check paid off, just a little more than I wanted. My opponent shoved all his chips in immediately, which really got me thinking. He had seen me fold a big hand earlier when put under pressure, and I knew he was more than capable of making the bet with almost anything. Also, the size of the bet meant that it was unlikely he had made his Flush, as if he had, he wouldn’t want to bet an amount that would force me out.

After thinking for a while, I decided I was probably in front, as I couldn’t see him making his Flush or Full House and then shoving everything in as he did. If I was wrong about being in front which I seriously doubted given the way the hand had played out, the Flush could still possibly save me anyway. I called, and my opponent turned over his (Q,7) for a pair of sevens.

Pokeroom.co.uk

This was a hand that took place in the side game this Wednesday at Pokeroom.co.uk, and just goes to show that sometimes in poker, the impossible can happen.

I had been dealt (8s,4s) and four of us decided to see a cheap flop. the flop came down (Js,9s,2c) and I checked. The next two players also checked, but the final player decided to make a big raise which equated to about a third of my stack. I knew this player was inexperienced, but I felt that he was probably trying to pick up the blinds.

We had a rebuy each available, and I really didn’t expect a call anyway, so I pushed all in. I had a Flush draw to fall back on if my opponent did have a reasonable part of the flop, but you can imagien my surprise as the first, second, and third players all went all in. I know rebuys can make players much more inclined to gamble, but I didn’t expect anybody had much of the flop.

I was clearly wrong though, as the first player turned over (7s,5s) for a weaker Flush draw, the second player (Qx,10x) for an open ended Straight draw, and the third player who made the raise, (Jx,9x) for top Two Pair. Out of these hands, the one which was drawing incredibly thin, was the (7s,5s). But by some miracle, the turn and river fell (7) then (7). This was about the only way the (7s,5s) could win the pot, and just goes to show that anything can happen in poker and your online poker rank can fluctuate at any time.

partypoker.com – getting a reaction

Much is made of the physical tells in poker, and whilst I would not say that they are meaningless, I would say that faces can lie, and betting patterns don’t.

Despite this, many players still attach a lot of importance to a persons reactions in different situations, and often try to provoke some sort of reaction which might give a hands strength or weakness away. Sometimes poker players will attempt to gauge the strength of your hand by simply taking a long time to make a decision, examining you as they wait. I know one player who does this, and whilst it can be a little uncomfortable (especially when bluffing) I simply sit staring at the middle of the table usually until he makes his decision.

I might be tempted to show some false signs of weakness if I have a strong hand though, as I already know I don’t have much to lose by trying. I am going to win the pot anyway, so trying to carefully look slightly nervous will only give me a chance of winning more.

Other players will ask you how many chips you have left, and so my tip in this case would be to count them before you make the move so you already know what you have left. Then you can simply say “four one” for 4,100 etc without having to start counting them up when you might be feeling a bit nervous inside. Personally, I do not often try to gauge an opponents hand strength by provoking a response, I simply discard the illogical possibilities as the hand develops and come to a most likely scenario as soon as possible in the hand.

Ladbroke Poker Popularity

It is difficult to see why Ladbroke Poker would not be all that popular with players, as it has much to offer in many areas. the choice of 3D avatars, the excellent reliability and customer support are helpful in this regard, but perhaps the reason lies in the fact that there are simply so many poker rooms available these days.

The number of people playing poker has steadily risen, and LadbrokePoker has reasonable enough player traffic, but it does not have a huge amount of exposure within the poker world that I have seen. The sites that do, seem to be the big names in poker rooms who have the best player traffic, but there has to be more to it than simply following the pros in which room to play at.

When I look for a site to play poker at, I generally look for something which makes one place stand out from another. I cannot see anything in particular which makes Ladbroke stand out from the best known names, but collectively they are an excellent poker room. Perhaps players have found their home in big name sites with complex online poker rank software and do not have any reason to change, as most people tend to be habitual with their spending and poker playing habits.

If you have one local shop you always go to, one equally as good could open up somewhere else, but that is unlikely to draw the customers away, you need to have something else that makes you stand out from the crowd. Big name sites are constantly offering bigger and better tournaments and so it can be hard to keep up, but I personally think that Ladbrokes do match the improvements of other sites well enough. So there is no real reason why players should not choose Ladbroke Poker over other sites.

PokerStars.com

This hand saw one player at my live game on PokerStars.com being dealt (10,10). There was a strong raise before the flop and one caller. The flop then fell (10,3,6) on a rainbow board, and the first player to act made a small raise.

Our player with (10,10) then proceeds to move all in with a huge reraise, and the orginal raiser folds.
This to me, shows inexperience. I would understand this play more if the board cards showed some obvious danger or cause to protect your hand, but on a rainbow flop, I think the last thing you want to do is force your opponent out. Some might point out that if our opponent had (4,5) they would have a Striaght draw, which would give cause to protect the hand, but considering our opponent called a preflop raise, I think we can usually count out the possibility of them holding (4,5).

You could say that the all in bet would attract a caller from a hand such as (3,3) or (6,6) but if you make a smaller reraise, you will probably be getting their chips either when they come over the top, or on the turn anyway if they do have that type of hand. The advantage of betting small is that if your opponent does have a hand such as (A,6), (A,10), you give them a chance to firstly think they might be in front, and secondly, to potentially hit their other hole card to make Two Pair and improve your online poker rank.

Creating poker chips at Ladbroke Poker

When fortune is with you Ladbroke poker, you will often find that the chips seem to almost be trying to make their way onto your stack. cards fall kindly, and you only have to play with a reasonable degree of competence in order to watch your stack grow.

As we all know, this does not happen all of the time, and sometimes, we need to engineer our own opportunities to expand our chips.

You can create these chances and online poker rank with well timed bets during the run of play, regardless of whether you are picking up hands or not. You must always be careful in doing so, but in some ways you should see it as hoarding away food for the winter, as cards can quickly run dry without warning, and the more chips you have to sit back and be patient, the better.

Picking up chips in these situations is not often about what cards you are holding, alhough a draw to fall back on is preferable. The key point in picking up pots is more what you feel your opponent has, and your position, than anything else. You must also consider your table image at the time of making well timed bluffs, because if players know they are being bluffed, you will soon find yourself getting callers. This is in fact why occasionally creating chips for yourself is a good thing when the cards are running well, as you are less likely to be called if you have been turning over strong hands.

Why is pokeroom closing down

There could be many reasons why Pokeroom has decided to close it’s doors, but you can be sure that it is not the only business that has been forced to in recent times.

I do not know enough about the internal workings of the company to know if the current financial climate is the reason why, but I could certainly understand if it was.

In these troubled times it is fair to say that an enjoyable pastime that costs money will be one of the first things people cut back on. I am sure the very big name poker rooms will get by just fine, but for some who may have had player flow problems, perhaps they simply decided that the company was not profitable anymore. This is all just guesswork of course, and perhaps it could be something as simple as wanting to reinvent the poker room completely. I know there is a message onsite redirecting players into a different poker room, so perhaps both these are owned by the same company and they feel it best to merge the player base into one.

We can only hope that it is something less serious such as this, as it would be a great shame to see poker rooms shutting down entirely. I am sure that it will not begin to become a large scale problem among other poker rooms, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Also, online poker is still growing as far as I can tell and so it would be surprising if poker rooms are beginning to close due to no longer being profitable. I hope the online poker rank list is still accessible for those interested though.

Party Poker still popular or has been

Party Poker is one of the oldest poker rooms around, and as such, had the first opportunity to attract a big player base before many other poker rooms arrived.

To my knowledge Party Poker still have good player traffic and are still the favourite site of many of those original players. if you were to ask them if Party Poker was still popular, I am sure they would think it was, but personally I feel the site has become dated over the years. In the current climate of there being so many poker rooms for players to choose from, you have to compete to remain popular. Sites such as Pokerstars and Full Tilt remain very popular, partly because they have all the latest in loyalty bonuses, reload bonuses, great customer care, and they simply never stop trying to be better than other poker rooms.

I feel that Party Poker are still a very good site to play at, and having the experience in this business must be a bonus too. One complaint I would have though, is that the same rather static, minimal choice, avatars were in place at Party Poker for a very long time. Many other aspects seemed to take a little too long to start moving along at the same speeds as most sites in my opinion. The online poker rank system was very impressive though.

Despite this, I would not say that Party Poker is a ‘has been’ site, just that they took a little while to respond to these many new poker rooms with new ideas. Party Poker has the advantage of experience, and if recent times are anything to go by, they have the will to keep improving too. That should ensure that they stay where they have been for so long, as one of the most recognisable names in online poker.

fulltiltpoker review

Full Tilt Poker is one of the biggest names in online poker, and has a very strong team of sponsored pros to endorse the site too.

I am not a regular player there myself, but I do know they have a great deal to offer both new, and experienced poker players. their welcome bonus is as good as most other sites you will find, they also offer reload bonuses, very big guaranteed tournaments, and loyalty bonuses too. This ensures that both the social players, and the more serious players are catered for. Visually the site looks good too, with a well structured tournament schedule offering variety and opportunity in terms of prize pools.

There are exciting new promotions regularly being updated onsite too, which are always effective ways to hold players interests. Every player likes loyalty bonuses, promotional offers and to keep an eye on their online poker rank, as it takes the every day poker playing schedule and adds something more in terms of enjoyment and potential financial gain. For these same reasons, innovative new tournament types such as terminator tourneys and double or nothing SnGs have been introduced online in recent months too.

Security and support on sites such as Full Tilt are of an excellent standard which will always help keep players happy, this just being one of numerous reasons why so many players choose sites like Full Tilt. This flow of player traffic also ensures that tables fill quickly no matter what game is your favoured one.
Overall, a very good site which is among the elite in online poker rooms.
